In the thermal spray process, the film is built up by impingement of molten droplets onto the substrate. Splats are created by flattening and spreading of the impacting droplets. Splat morphology can determine the microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of the sprayed coating. Beside thermal barrier coatings (TBC) is the most important coating in turbine industry. TBCs are able to reduce the temperature on the surface of the component, as well as to protect it from the attack promoted by environmental contaminants, thus increasing both the temperature capability and durability, without compromising the mechanical strength of the structural component. It should be mentioned that conventional TBCS have so many problems. In this presentation first I talk about challenges of new sprayed materials and then discuss the state-of-the-art, the recent developments and the future perspectives in the field of TBCs, focusing the
attention on advanced materials and new architectures of TBCs.
