Google hit with €4.3 billion fine from EU for abusing market dominance
Google has been fined a record €4.34 billion by the European Commission for breaching anti-trust rules and abusing its market position.
European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager said the technology giant had engaged in “illegal practices to cement its dominant market position in internet search” and that it was restricting mobile phone manufacturers that used its Android mobile operating system to ensure it drove traffic to Google’s own search engine. This was “denying rivals a chance to innovate and compete,” said Vestager.
The technology giant has been given 90 days to make changes or face financial penalties.
In a statement, Google Europe said: “Android has created more choice for everyone, not less. A vibrant ecosystem, rapid innovation and lower prices are classic hallmarks of robust competition. We will appeal the Commission’s decision.”
